How to Avoid Speeding Fines

In the United Kingdom, if you are caught speeding you will receive a minimum of three points on your driving license. If you do this four times during a three year period, resulting in a total of twelve points, you will lose your license. Staying within the speed limit is the obvious solution, although what if you didn’t realise the speed you were doing for a fair reason, or there were mitigating circumstances?

How to avoid speeding fines? Clearly the same rigid set of rules cannot apply in every situation?

In city centres, cameras are omnipresent, in major cities such as London for example it can seem like there is one on every street. There is no avoiding this, however in city centres traffic can be so dense as to make to impossible to get anywhere near the speed limit. Some methods are simple enough.

Be aware of the speed limit, basic road knowledge but easy to forget during driving whilst your mind is on other things. Obviously in built up areas the limit is likely to be 30 mph. Although, 30 mph limits can also be in others areas. Dual carriageways and motorways are the roads where it can be tempting to go over the limit.

If your car has a cruise control feature then travelling on long roads where the limit is likely to remain steady will ensure you stay within the limit.

Another possibility is to avoid speeding fines using a GPS system, many of these have speed camera databases built in and can tell you what the limit is on the road on which you are travelling and as they monitor your speed too they can provide an audible warning when you are on the brink of breaking the limit, In the UK this is fine, however in some countries having this information on your GPS is illegal, and unlikely to be on your device anyway as the databases for these countries will be from user generated content. Perhaps not the most reliable method in this instance.

Avoiding speeding fines on longer roads can be made especially difficult when there are average speed cameras being used. These will measure your average speed over a certain distance recording your speed first at one point then at another point further down the road. In this situation where you have failed to notice the first camera you could try switching lanes. Not foolproof perhaps but certainly worth trying.

So how can you avoid paying speeding fines if you have already been caught? Firstly just because you have broken the limit you still may not receive a ticket if you have been driving marginally over the limit. If you are intending to contest your fine, keep a record of the details of where you were, which lane you were in etc. Small details may prove invaluable at a later date.
